From the traditional canoe races of the Haudenosaunee to modern-day marathon events, the state's waters have witnessed centuries of competitive paddling evolution. Indigenous Origins Long before European settlers arrived, Native American nations in what is now New York State held canoe races as both practical skill-building exercises and ceremonial events. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, in particular, used dugout and bark canoes for transportation and fishing on the Finger Lakes and along the Mohawk River.
